Description

Please join us as we hear from Dr. Heidi Croatt, a professor of Communication Studies, teaching courses in interpersonal communication and relationships. Speaking on Beyond Birds and Bees: Raising Sexually Healthy Kids - Special Needs Edition.

Answering questions like... When should my child know how babies are made? How do we explain what sex is to our child who is asking us? Why does my child keep ‘touching’ themselves? How worried should I be about my child’s access to pornography? How do I help my child understand boundaries, safety, and body awareness? My child is starting to hear a lot of sexual language from other kids at school…what should I do? Parenting is hard. When we think about adding in conversations about sex and sexuality…it can feel overwhelming. And when we add in our child's special needs, we might feel like we have no idea where to start. Let's learn how to raise sexually healthy kids, answer some common questions our kids ask us, and discuss some of the questions we have about how to approach this topic with our children of different ages, developmental abilities, and needs. Research is clear that parents who talk with their children about sex from an early age have a great impact on helping their children make “sexually healthy decisions.” We’ll start by learning what that means, understanding how we can support our kids at different stages of life, and leave feeling more comfortable and confident navigating this topic in your family. And we'll have some fun along the way! These meetings are open to parents, caregivers, friends, family, and anyone else in the community that would like to learn and grow with us.
